Christmas and the holiday season are just around the corner. Do you teach about the various holiday traditions around the world? I think it is important for students to have an understanding that we may celebrate different things than our friends. It helps to teach tolerance.
Holidays Around the World
I have been working hard to complete my holidays around the world pack. I have combined my close reading and interactive packs to make an interactive, close reading packet.
The plan is to have my students describe some traditions they have with their families. Comparing our own traditions with others is a fun way to teach compare and contrast. You can find a traditions freebie here. I tried to stay away from the gift giver of the season and focus more on other traditions.
The following countries are included:
- United States
The Christmas Around the World pack includes Christmas celebrations. There are add-on packs for the following holidays:
Picture File Cards
Each year I have a few students who are English language learners. Picture file cards are a great way to show what words mean when you can’t bring in the real thing. Each country has picture file cards.
I have all of their passport applications, airline tickets and passports prepped and ready to go. I made the passport say holidays around the world because I teach about Diwali, Hanukkah, and Chinese New Year as well. There are lots of fun interactive notebook pages.
I am so excited to begin our journey with a fresh look. I need to remember to emphasize that this is a pretend trip. One year, I had a child so upset because she was afraid she would miss her mom too much to travel around the world!
