Story Treasure Bags (Freebie)

|

Do your students love read-alouds? I am guessing most students do. In our kindergarten class, we have story treasure bags that students use to collect ‘treasures’ from a story we read each week. You can think of a story treasure as a souvenir from a story. It has been a great way for my students to share what we have been reading at school with their families at home.

Story Treasure Bags

What is a story treasure bag? A story treasure bag is a small bag that each student takes home with them to keep in a safe space. We keep one in our classroom as well. The bag is to store our story treasure each week. Each student takes home the treasure and recording sheet to share with their families.

How do I implement story treasures each week?

Story treasures can be done however works best for your class. In our class, we planned stories to read each week for the school year. Each story goes with the themes we have, contains vocabulary words we want to teach, and has comprehension skills we want to teach. Click below to see our list of read-alouds and treasures (will be updated as we add more stories).

Read our list of read-aloud ideas, treasures, and resources here.

At the beginning of each week, we read the story multiple times as an interactive read-aloud. You can read more about using interactive read-alouds in your class here.

Throughout the week, we do vocabulary and comprehension activities that go with each story.

At the end of the week, we draw a picture that will help us remember the story. Finally, I attach the story treasure to the paper or put the treasure in a small jewelry bag and send it home. Students will put the treasure in their story treasure bag they have at home. I also email a link to the story on Youtube each week to my families, so they can listen to it and ask questions about it.
