Favorite Pumpkin Books for the Classroom

|

Fall is by far my favorite time of year in the classroom. I love the fall themes, crafts, and most of all pumpkin books! There are so many excellent pumpkin activities that go along with pumpkin-themed books.

Favorite Pumpkin Books

There are so many pumpkin book titles that are amazing. Here are a few of my favorites that we have in our classroom library.

Stumpkin

The book Stumpkin by Lucy Ruth Cummins is a new book in our class library and it is a favorite! Stumpkin is the most perfect pumpkin in the neighborhood. He is bright orange and as round as a basketball! He has no bad side! He’s the perfect choice for a Halloween jack-o-lantern. There is just one problem, he has a stump, not a stem. And no one seems to want a stemless pumpkin for their jack-o-lantern.

Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin Pie

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1426305826&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theteacherbag 20&language=en USir?t=theteacherbag 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=1426305826

The book Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin Pie by Jill Esbaum has wonderful photographs in this book that takes you through the seasons of growing pumpkins. Students love to see the progression of a pumpkin growing. When we had our apple books out, we read a book about apples by the same author. I usually read this story when we make pumpkin pie in a cup for a treat!

Pumpkin Jack

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0807566667&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theteacherbag 20&language=en USir?t=theteacherbag 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=0807566667

Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell is a great book to use when you are teaching about the life cycle of a pumpkin. It shows the importance of rotting pumpkins and what can come from them. The cover of this book is a great talking point to start with. Ask your students why the illustrator chose to draw a rotting pumpkin. It is fun to hear their answers.

Pumpkin Soup

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0374460310&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theteacherbag 20&language=en USir?t=theteacherbag 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=0374460310

Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper is a fun story about Duck, Squirrel, and Cat. Making pumpkin soup together is something they enjoy doing daily with each other. They each have specific jobs when they make their soup. One day Duck decides he wants to try a different job when making soup. Things don’t go so well. Duck soon learns the importance of listening to his friends and working together as a team.

Too Many Pumpkins

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0823413209&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theteacherbag 20&language=en USir?t=theteacherbag 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=0823413209

Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White is a story about a lady named Rebecca. Rebecca hates pumpkins because when she was a girl, pumpkins were often the only food her family had. One day an enormous pumpkin falls off a truck that was driving by her house and smashes in her yard. She covers pieces of broken pumpkin with dirt and forgets about them. But when autumn comes, she finds them all over her garden.

Pumpkin Circle: The Story of a Garden

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1582460787&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theteacherbag 20&language=en USir?t=theteacherbag 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=1582460787

Pumpkin Circle by George Levenson is another great book for teaching about the life cycle of a pumpkin. The photographs take students through the life cycle of a pumpkin, including making a jack-0-lantern.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0375840141&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theteacherbag 20&language=en USir?t=theteacherbag 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=0375840141

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara is a must-read book if you are counting seeds in your class. During our pumpkin science week, we have a class pumpkin that we open up and work together to count pumpkin seeds. This book lends itself as a great companion to your pumpkin seed counting. The book looks at the different amounts of seeds in big, medium, and small pumpkins.

The Biggest Pumpkin Ever

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0590464639&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theteacherbag 20&language=en USir?t=theteacherbag 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=0590464639

The Biggest Pumpkin Ever by Steven Kroll is part of a collection of books by this author. Clayton and Desmond are two mice who are always competing for something, but they don’t let that ruin their friendship. In this story, they are both trying to win a contest for the biggest pumpkin in contest. They don’t realize that they are both going to the same pumpkin.

Spookley the Square Pumpkin

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07GXZ2GTG&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theteacherbag 20&language=en USir?t=theteacherbag 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=B07GXZ2GTG

Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Trioano is an all-time favorite with my students. The story has been around for a while, but many kids know the movie and not the book. If you are not familiar with this book, it is about a square pumpkin who doesn’t see his purpose. He thinks he should be round like the other pumpkins. Spookley soon learns that all shapes and size pumpkins are important. As an extension, I let my students make a pumpkin with any color and shape of paper that they want.

The crazy thing is this list is a small handful of pumpkin books we have in our class library. There are so many fun titles. What are some of your favorite pumpkin books?
