Happy Friday! I must start off saying, that it has been one of those weeks. I think a couple of my kids completely forgot what it means to be first grader…oh my word! Or, it couple be they are ready for spring break… which is next week! I am linking up with Kacey over at Doodle Bugs Teaching for her Five For Friday.
One
We continued learning about American symbols this week. We started the week learning about the Liberty Bell. We read all about this symbol, worked in our interactive notebooks and drew Liberty Bells. Maybe I have been living under a rock, but I just discovered Art for Kids Hub. Oh my word, I love this youtube channel. It makes a great rainy day activity…my students were silent!
First we drew the Liberty Bell. Next, we used metallic oil pastels to color them in. They turned out great! I will probably have my students cut them out and mount them in a different color paper.
Two
We also learned about the Statue of Liberty this week. My class loved learning about Lady Liberty. We watched videos linked to QR codes, worked in our interactive notebooks and drew Lady Liberty.
We also painted them, but they are still not done. We have a couple more steps before they are done.
We are learning all we can about American symbols and then we will be writing an opinion piece about our favorite one.
Three
The rain has come to Northern California! It has been a long week of rainy day recess, thank goodness Go Noodle is around. Our backyard looks like we have a second swimming pool.
Four
We have been learning all about vowel teams these last two weeks. I love this time of the year! Introducing long vowels always opens up a whole new world of reading. Our sound cards are always a good reminder of the sounds while we are sounding out difficult words.
Five
It’s an especially nice Friday this week because I am officially on spring break! When is your spring break this year?
I know all about rain. We are getting so much here in Louisiana, it is awful! We have been out school for three days because so much flooding in my community. Luckily my house is dry, but several of my coworkers were not so lucky. We still have 2 weeks to go until spring break!

Your use of the QR codes is great! I bet your students really were engaged throughout that activity. Living in Georgia, we have had our share of rain as well. But thank goodness we haven’t closed schools due to flooding! Enjoy your spring break!! Linda Groce of Linda’s Learning Loot
