Election Day Books for the Primary Grade Classroom
Whenever it is election time, I add Election day books to our classroom library so I can read them to my students. I think it is important to teach students what it means to vote. More importantly, how lucky we are that we are able to vote in our country. We even hold an election in our classroom for a very important topic (favorite cookie)!

What is an election?
What is an Election? is a nonfiction book that provides some basic election process information for kids. There are also real photographs, which are helpful. This book is a great one to add if you are looking to build background knowledge.
One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote
My student loves these informational Cat in the Hat Books. This One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote by Bonnie Worth is an informational book that introduces the concept of voting for a president. The fun part is the book is written in rhyme.
I voted: making a choice makes a difference
The book I voted: Making a Choice Makes a Difference by Mark Shulman is a great book to read if you plan to vote for something in your class. It introduces kids to the concept of choosing something.
The Night before election day
My students love these ‘Night Before’ books. The Night before election day by Natasha Wing is another fun book in this series that I read to my students before our class Election Day. We compare the events to ours and see what is the same and what is different.
Duck for President
Duck for President by Doreen Cronin is a silly book that your students will love. It is helpful if you have read the book Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type first. The first book helps kids understand Duck and his frustrations with farm life. When we read Duck for president, we look at the character traits of Duck and Farmer Brown. We also compare and contrast Duck and Farmer Brown. You may find this Duck For President interactive read-aloud kit helpful
Grace for President
Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio is a very empowering book. In this story, Grace learns that the United States has never had a female president. She decides to see what running for office is like in her school elections. Grace learns that running for office can be tough. Be sure to check this book out!
My Teacher For President
My Teacher For President by Kay Winters is a fun story that shows how a teacher’s job description is similar to the president. Oliver, the boy in the story decides that his teacher should run for president.
Splat the Cat for President
My class loves Splat the Cat books. They are silly and always offer a way to teach about problem and solution. Your class will love Splat the Cat for President by Rob Scotton.
If I Ran For President
If I ran for president by Catherine Steir is a nonfiction book that gives students an informative look at the election process from the point of view of the candidate. It shows your students that running for president is hard work.
V is for Voting
V is for Voting by Kate Ferrell is an ABC book that addresses ideas like social justice, equality, active participation, and so much more. This is a newer book that is a must-have for a classroom!
Election Ballot
In November, we usually vote on something in our class. It usually involves food, because yum! I have made a simple, editable ballot that is perfect for a kindergarten or first-grade class for you to use. You can download it here.
