Using Your 5 Senses to Explore Popcorn

Using popcorn to teach about your five senses is a fun and engaging way to teach your students about observing things. I love to have a popcorn observation day in my class! We use our sense of sight, smell, touch, sound, and taste to observe this fluffy, white treat.

Five Senses Popcorn

There are a couple of ways you can go about providing popcorn to your students. You can use microwave bags or individual bags of popcorn for your students to taste, feel, smell, touch, and observe.

One thing that I love to do is bring in an air popper and let students observe the kernels turn into fluffy, white popcorn. Many of my students have not watched the magic of popping corn before!

Once we have our popcorn, I give each student a cup full and we go through the process of using our five senses to generate adjectives describing the popcorn.

Students record their observations on a recording sheet.

My class loves using their senses to observe popcorn. Throughout the year, we do the same thing with coconuts, apples, and pumpkins!
